The Very Selected: D H Lawrence
Lawrence was a prolific poet, but for a long time his poetry was overshadowed by the prestige and scandal of his novels. More recently the novels themselves have retreated somewhat into the shadows, from prolonged ideological attack and perhaps more seriously a sense that they have become more difficult and remote, at least for younger readers. Much of his poetry, however, is still vividly alive – it doesn’t seem to have dated at all. The poetry falls into several distinct phases, all of which are represented in this selection.
