From a Borrowed Land

£4.50£6.50

Marked by trauma, From a Borrowed Land bears witness to the Tamil experience during the Sri Lankan civil war. From the safety of ‘the borrowed land’, these poems remember and grieve both historical and personal loss: loss of lives, of a homeland, of a language, and of a way of life.

What Writers and Critics Think

  • With elegant ferocity this pamphlet speaks for 'a people now without a place' – a people almost totally unrepresented, invisible, in the Western media. Even (especially) if these Troubles are not your Troubles, you need to read these astringent yet illuminatingly subtle poems.

    Vidyan Ravinthiran
  • Shash Trevett writes with evocative clarity. This is a troubling and enriching body of work, including both original poems and translations, woven together into one distinctive voice.

    Sasha Dugdale
  • Shash Trevett's poetic voice is subtle yet echoes her controlled anger when singing about flattened tombstones and dispossessed people. The interior landscapes she paints in this volume remind us of classical and colourful old Tamil poetry while exuding contemporary realities.
