What is Dynamo? It is the first full-length collection by an extraordinarily entertaining and exhilarating poet. Over the course of this book, things break down, start again, light up, get stuck. Relationships stagnate, mountains and seas diminish, White nationalists fall over in Blackpool, and a wealthy couple’s house disappears one day, leaving them surrounded by their appliances, tanned and eating an egg.

Dynamo is a superb first collection; funny, original and wonderfully weird.
– Jessica Traynor, Irish Times

His deadpan humour and fragmentary, quick-fire writing in response to everyday events at times recalls Frank O’Hara.
– Mary Mulholland, The Alchemy Spoon

What Writers and Critics Think

  • He can make the ordinariness of everyday existence gleam without being flashy… These are highly quotable poems, packed with lines you want to read aloud to anyone within earshot.

D A Prince, The Friday Poem
  • Yates’ way of seeing is an admission that nothing is making sense, an open-eyed, and strangely brilliant examination of the zeitgeist as if viewed by a child, or from another planet… Yates informs his vision with a sense of stilled silence, slowing his narrative to a recumbent pace, to yield the panoptic distillation of a train journey in moments of staggering, simplistic beauty.

    - Steve Whitaker, The Yorkshire Times
  • Many of these poems memorably manage to capture moments in time like photographic snapshots… Yates is insightful on the detail of modern life, looking at every day experiences in different ways.

Description

I’m always listening out for a new poet who can take the deceptively effortless, witty yet ultimately serious chops of the New York School, make it work for this generation and bring the whole thing in to land just outside a British city, losing nothing in transit. And God it’s been worth the wait. This is a poetry of exquisite timing, with some of the most satisfying last lines I’ve ever read. Yates can take an everyday domestic detail and make it sparkle with the mystery of a Raedecker painting. – Luke Kennard
