What Writers and Critics Think

  • Notes On Water does not just delve into the opaque waters of grief (which it does so movingly) but all the ways that water runs through and punctuates our lives. Here are two extraordinary poems that explore water's complex journey through our lives, taking us back to the past and forward to the future, meeting the seven-year-old Amanda on a beach in Wales one minute and the recently bereaved woman the next. Haunting, elegiac, engrossing and ultimately energising, deeply affecting, and philosophical, Notes on Water will make you think about water in a million ways. The way water sings. The way it threatens and heals.

  • 'Before I can say goodbye to the man who will leave in winter…' A beautiful, visceral exploration of grief. A river full of wreckage with nothing that will make a raft. Amanda Dalton’s Notes on Water takes us lyrically through the universal human experience of loss. Everything is sodden, cold, sunken. Homes are flooded, broken. The village is not a haven. Nothing is solid. Hotels fall into the sea, everything slips and changes, including time. This is the first piece of poetry that Amanda has written for a while, following the death of her partner in 2019. It moved me beyond words.
