Selected Poems & Translations: Yvonne Green

£6.95

I like the way good food and diction go together so clearly. Geographically [these poems] excel, and in so many other directions too. The poems are different to what one normally gets in English, the issues far bigger, as in “Dhimmi Under Sharia Law” (A Lawyer’s Poem) and in many others that one may benefit from. Such excellent poems show how different customs can nevertheless blend, especially in, “We Speak English Now.” I also very much like, “That I May Know You:” “Let me visit your houise/and eat something/of what is on your table/hear you and know/some of your language.” — Alan Sillitoe

What Writers and Critics Think

  • Beautiful language conjuring up exotic places and forgotten communities. Depictions of jewel like foods and close knit families lure one into this other world. But notes of discord unsettle, compelling the reader to persist, to peel back the layers revealing the pain behind the idyll. Accessible, evocative and thought provoking - everything one wants from poetry.

  • Yvonne Green writes so beautifully. I read it one go cherishing the bite-sized stories, experiences and tastes of life through her eyes from Alexandria to London. Highly recommend.

    Online Bookshop Review
  • Yvonne Green has a unique voice and writes beautifully often referencing a now displaced exotic and ancient history and culture & reconciling it with modern life in the West . Her writing is brave, authentic and moving and I loved this collection .
