Voting for Spring

The keynote of Paul Mills’ new book is affirmation and uncertainty. In this collection Mills details his reaction to his daughter’s psychiatric illness, with her recovery as the subject of the powerful poem sequence ’21/2001′. This collection also features poems based on archive films.

Voting for Spring reflects Mills’ ability to move between the remote and everyday, to combine intense vividness with philosophical insight.

Paul Mills was born in Cheshire in 1948. He has held writing fellowships at Manchester and Leeds universities and a Fulbright exchange fellowship at Santa Cruz, California. Until recently Paul taught at York St John University. His publications include four books of poems and The Routledge Creative Writing Coursebook. His plays have been performed at West Yorkshire Playhouse and the National Theatre. He is a painter as well as a poet and lives in Ripon, North Yorkshire.

Description

Central to the title poem is the long human struggle for survival against ice and cold. The poem makes contact with our present climate crisis, as well as suggesting a dimension which is more personal.
