Writing Poems with Ann and Peter Sansom at The Hurst

The Arvon Foundation at The Hurst, Shropshire

Monday 2nd to Friday 5th September

Applications are invited for this intensive but very enjoyable course of writing and reading with ‘the best poetry teachers in the world’ (The Guardian).  Taking classic and contemporary poems as model and stimulus, you will move your practice on while drafting (and actually finishing) a number of poems in just one week.  There will be some free time, as well as a supportive workshop, optional small group discussion, and in the evenings The World Poetry Festival (where everyone will read from a favourite poet).  

How to apply

Please submit four poems, a short biog note and a paragraph saying what you would hope to get out of the course.   Both new and experienced poets are encouraged to apply, as we are hoping to bring together a varied group who will get the most from taking part in this special adventure.

Cost is £885, fully catered, single-occupancy.

The Hurst is a wonderful and wonderfully comfortable place to write, with lovely en-suite rooms in a manor house set in acres of beautiful woodland.  

About the Tutors

Ann Sansom’s books include Romance and In Praise of Men & Other People (Bloodaxe).  She has taught at Sheffield Hallam and has been visiting poet at Leeds, Oxford and Exeter universities, as well as guest poet at First Direct Bank and the Times Educational Supplement

Peter’s books include a Selected Poems and Lanyard (Carcanet). He has taught poetry at Leeds and Manchester universities and has been Company Poet with M&S and The Prudential.

Ann and Peter are Co-Directors of the Poetry Business in Sheffield, and editors of The North magazine and Smith|Doorstop Books. In 2019 they were awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Sheffield.
